I've Committed A Traffic Offence, Do I Need A Lawyer?

Is there anything worse than seeing those blue flashing lights pull up behind you? Your stomach drops as you realise that it’s you they are pulling over. You assess everything you just did. Were you speeding? Were you driving erratically? More often than not, it’s just a routine check. Perhaps you’ve got a broken tail light. Sometimes, it’s much worse than that. Committing a traffic violation comes with its heavy penalties. In the worst cases, you may need a lawyer to help you out.

It’s not always easy to determine whether a lawyer is necessary after your traffic offence. In many cases, everything can be handled yourself. We’ll take a look at a few scenarios and assess whether you’d benefit from legal advice.

First of all, it’s important to stress that the police can stop you at any time. You are legally required to stop and obey their orders. Doing so will also give you a better standing later on.

Minor Offences

When it comes to minor offences, it is unlikely that you need the help of a lawyer. Something like a small speeding ticket can be dealt with on your own. You’ll receive a small fine and some penalty points. The same is true for defect charges. That’s when you’ve been pulled over for a problem on the car. For example, if you have a broken tail light, the police will ask you to get it fixed. You’ll just need to bring proof (a mechanic’s receipt) to the police station within seven days. (more…)
