The Facts About Whiplash Injuries

Whether you are the driver or a passenger, being involved in a car accident is always a terrible shock. When another car hits theirs from behind, people often walk away from the accident at the time thinking that they have escaped any injury. Sadly, this is often not the case, with whiplash symptoms sometimes taking hold up to 12 hours after the accident.

What is whiplash?

Whiplash is not a medical term, but rather a colloquial description for a range of injuries to the spine, usually in the neck area. These injuries can occur when another car crashes into the back of you. Such an impact results in the heads of the driver and passengers of the front vehicle lurching suddenly forwards and subsequently ‘whipping’ backwards. This forces the spine into an unnatural ‘S’ shape which can in turn lead to hyperextension of both ligaments and muscles in the neck. (more…)
